CIRCLE – Project Design

Four down and four accross

CIRCLE’s WorkPackage (WP) structure follows an easy matrix approach.

The main work is done within the four vertical WPs, which reflect a stepwise deepening of the integration level during CIRCLE’s lifetime:

  1. Systematic exchange of information and best practices on existing programmes (I)
  2. Identification and analysis of common strategic issues (II)
  3. Development of joint activities between national or regional programmes (III)
  4. Implementation of joint transnational research activities (IV)

These strands will be complemented by four cross-sectional activities – project coordination, establishing a platform for continued coordination after CIRCLE is ended, and supporting the establishment of groups within the consortium which want to address similar issues, such as Mediterranean countries, Nordic countries, Continental central and eastern Europe, mountainous countries and Atlantic coastal countries. Finally, CIRCLE will develop an active, targeted approach to dissemination of its information and experience.

  1. enhanced project management, to reflect the larger partnership and the deeper collaboration, and strong leadership to achieve a commonly accepted vision
  2. long lasting impact, i.e. activities that ensure continuity of the activity beyond the life-time of the project
  3. enable groups of programmes within European geo-climatic areas, e.g., Nordic Countries, the Alpine Region, Mediterranean areas, which share common interests or problems
  4. targeted dissemination to decision makers in environmental policy, to the scientific community, to other ERA-Nets etc. to spread the results of CIRCLE
