Short name: BMBF

The BMBF implements the priorities of the German Federal Government within the framework of educational planning and research funding. With an annual budget of over € 8 billion the BMBF finances numerous establishments and projects either alone or in conjunction with the Länder. Together they finance a total of over 30% of all R&D expenditure in Germany. The BMBF also finances about two thirds of the basic institutional funding for the main German research organizations (German Research Association (DFG), the centres of the Helmholtz Association (HFG), the Max Planck Society (MPG), the Fraunhofer Society (FHG), the institutions of the Leibniz Association and the academies).

Research on climate impact and adaptation falls under the framework programme of the BMBF entitled "Research for Sustainability". Adopted by the Federal Cabinet in 2004, an average of €160 million over a five year period will be made available for research for sustainable development in Germany. The programme is considered a major element of the innovation initiative for growth, employment and a sustainable society.
