Short name: FCT
The Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) is the main funding agency for research in Portugal with a status of a public organisation with administrative and financial autonomy, under the aegis of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education.
FCT strategic responsibility is to ensure the achievement of the objectives of the national policy for Science, Technology and Innovation. FCT covers all fields of science, from natural sciences to humanities, normally in a responsive mode, aiming at capability enhancement and research excellence. FCT funding is structured around the following schemes: promotion of training and career development (fellowships, scholarships, mainly for PhD, Post-doc and PhD in industry), support of centres of excellence (observing laboratories) and research centres (institutional funding), support to infrastructures, promotion and development of scientific activity (research projects) and diffusion of scientific culture.
The total budget of FCT in the last three years has increased from 185M€ in 2003 to 282 M€ in 2005.
