Short name: IMELS
The Department for Environmental Research and Development belongs to the Italian Italian Ministry for the Environment and Land and Sea (IMELS). In particular, the Environmental Research and Development (RAS) department supports public and private research organisations such as CNR, INGV, ENEA, University’s scientific Departments for targeted actions and promotes environmental programs and pilot projects, in co-operation with international and national, regional and local bodies.
Research programs and actions are developed and financed within the framework of the Multi-annual National Plan of Research, which is implemented in collaboration with other Ministries, i.e. Economy and Finance, Scientific and Technological Research, Industry, Health and Agriculture.
IMELS has allocated approximately 70 Million Euro in about 35 research activities, which will be developed in three years. Most of the in progress research activities involve different aspects related to mitigation of and adaptation to the adverse effects of climate change. This includes the study, monitoring and provisional modelling of the Carbon cycle, the development of renewable sources and the development of Carbon-free technologies for production of energy and transport.
