The long-term goal of the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia and its Climate and Renewable Energy Departement is to facilitate the sustainable development of the state, integrating climate change mitigation and adaptation, and renewable energy policy in the sector of national economy and the strategies and programmes of the state regional development, working cloesly with researchers, entrepreneurs and other groups of society.

The programme "Climate change impacts on the water of Latvia" (2006-2009) is carried out by the University of Latvia (LU).
The general goal of this programme is to assess short-, medium- and long-term impacts of climate change on the environemt and ecosystems of inner waters of Latvia and the Balitc Sea, and tro create a scientific basis for adaptation of environmental and sectoral policies of Latvias to CC.
