CEES

Within the framework of CIRCLE different groups have been established mostly based on geographical situation. The formation of a Central and Central-Eastern European States group (CEES group), where the requirements of the new EU member states are met, is in progress. The purpose of this group would be to launch transnational activities together, perhaps even joint calls, on adaptation research issues. The first step would be to get to know each other's problems and to see if we could find a common platform for co-operation, of which one pillar could be provided by CIRCLE but the other pillar of which could be found in the individual countries.

As a first step for establishing the CEES group a workshop was organized in Budapest in May 2008.

  • Contents of the workshop

At first an introduction to CIRCLE´s activities and achievements was provided. Individual countries´ experiences with a focus on Eastern Europe as well as different approaches and tools for the network were presented.

  • Scope of the workshop

The goal was to facilitate and establish collaboration in research initiatives, which may result in the alignment of national research agendas, and possibly lead to transnational research activities and joint calls for proposals.

Several representatives from different Eastern European Countries were participating (Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Estonia and Hungary) and represented their national initiatives/programmes regarding Climate Change Adaptation. The research priorities of different regions were introduced.

  • Recommendations of the workshop

The establishment of a CIRCLE Network for information flow within the CEES region was suggested. Information exchange on national CIRCLE connected activities as well as the establishment of continuous connection between the participating countries and CIRCLE. It was agreed to continue the series of CEES Workshops.

  • To stimulate administrative and scientific development of national and regional programmes and projects on CC impacts and adaptation in the CEES region, supported by CIRCLE.
  • Spread CIRCLE activities within own countries.
