CIRCLE Workshop on National Adaptation Strategies: Budapest 17-18 June 2009
CIRCLE ERA-Net provides a European platform for knowledge exchange in the field of Climate Change, Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability (CCIAV). The Budapest Workshop offered the space for many national representatives currently working on their countries Adaptation Strategies to discuss, interact and share their lessons learnt on key themes such as: processes and drivers for developing adaptation strategies; the involvement of stakeholders; and how to better communicate those strategies.
The Outcomes of the workshop are now available.
The first day started with an introduction was based on a brief introduction to the efforts and results of CIRCLE ERA-Net, and the presentation of the main outcomes of the PEER Study – Europe adapts to Climate change: Comparing National Adaptation Strategies - released on June 23rd 2009 (Study on the Peer webpage).
After the initial discussion on those outcomes and efforts, the following countries presented (see links bellow) their approaches and latest developments on National Adaptation Strategies (NAS):
- Spain
- Hungary
- Denmark
- Germany
- Netherlands
- Finland
- Sweden
- Turkey
- UN Programme – Enhancing the capacity of Turkey to adapt to climate change
Following these presentations, participants from other represented countries where given the opportunity to briefly describe their own efforts towards NAS. From the audience it was possible to ear new information on the status and current developments in countries such as Portugal, UK, Poland, Switzerland and Norway.
On the second day the participants could choose to interact in two parallel working groups dedicated to the following topics:
Working group 1: NAS as learning process! Options, frameworks and uncertainties.
Working group 2: Europe adapts to Climate Change. Science as the knowledge base for informed strategies.
After the split up groups, the Workshop proceeded with the final plenary session that saw the questions raised on day 1 and the discussions outcomes of this second day be openly debated across the audience. The CIRCLE Budapest Workshop provided an excellent forum of discussion, where the latest news and developments on European National Adaptation Strategies played a central role.
