Workshop Agenda and Take home messages

CIRCLE project clustering

For strengthening scientific collaboration in climate impact and adaptation research on the European platform, CIRCLE is providing the module of project clustering. The idea is to bring together scientists on a selected topic in a workshop and discuss matters in a structured way. Whereas this workshop can serve as an exchange of views and experience on the scientific side, it can also be utilized in a scoping sense from the research funders’ point of view.

Two workshops have been taken place, on the topics of “Design and use of Decision Support Systems” and “Cost – Benefit in Adapting to Climate Change”. The first one was triggered by the fact that integrated research on climate change is regularly comprised in integrated systems, and, because of adaptation research becoming more and more user-oriented, in decision support systems with a strong link to stakeholders. One of the results of the discussion was a list of do’s and don’ts in order to develop a system with a high chance for application also outside the scientific world.

The second workshop had more the character of a scoping meeting, driven by the question on how to calculate costs, risks and benefits in terms of climate adaptation, with the long-term objective of making adaptation to climate change really happen. This topic was rather tricky to catch and again, as in the workshop on decision support systems, the interface between science and user seemed to be crucial. As a take-home message for the funders’ side it has been noted that such workshops have to be arranged with a real good mix of participants from all acting sides, scientists and stakeholders.

Apart from the fact that CIRCLE project clustering has been noted to be a valuable tool for

a) shaping the research scene in Europe to some degree and

b) a scoping process,

the findings from this exercise are in strong accordance with the goals of the design of CIRCLE-2, especially with the aims of the planned work package SHARE. Here, a strong emphasis will be given to the interface between science and users, the main interface to make adaptation to climate change really happen and science supporting the policy process in this highly relevant field on climate change.
